To understand the value and importance of antioxidants, you must first understand the destructive results of free radicals.

Free radicals occur naturally as a result of normal, daily reactions within your body. Essentially, when a molecule is a free radical, it is an unstable molecule which contains a free electron which is seeking a connection. These molecules seek to complete this unstable existence by latching on to tissues such as blood vessel linings or cell membranes, creating a chronic state of inflammation within the body. This on-going inflammation eventually results in damage to various tissues of the body. Antioxidants bind to the free radicals, thus preventing the damage they would normally cause.

The damage caused by free radicals has been linked to heart disease, cancer, arthritis, and many other conditions and illnesses. Free radical damage is also believed to contribute to many other degenerative aspects of aging, such as wrinkles, hardening of arteries, and some of the loss of mental acuity that sometimes occurs with age.

Antioxidants are available in many different forms and substances. Vitamins such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta carotene (a form of vitamin A) are antioxidants in addition to their other benefits to your health and well-being. Selenium and zinc are two minerals which are also antioxidants.

Other compounds; cysteine, glutamic acid, and glutathione, for example, are also antioxidants, as are natural and herbal products such as ginkgo, hawthorn, rosemary, green tea extract, and grape seed extract.

Vitamin A, in the form of beta carotene, is water soluble and can be found in vegetables such as spinach. Vitamin A is important for skin health, helps growth in children and protects against night blindness in addition to other benefits.

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) is crucial to the body’s ability to produce collagen, an important protein that keeps skin damage minimal. Collagen can delay the development of wrinkles and saggy skin by helping skin hold onto its elasticity. Vitamin C also expedites the body’s ability to repair tissues so wounds heal more quickly. It is also important in the body’s ability to absorb and use several other nutrients.

Vitamin E (Alpha-Tocopherol), like vitamin C, is not produced or stored in the body, so it must be constantly replenished through diet or supplementation. It encourages the proper development of muscles. It can help boost the effectiveness of the immune system, primarily by making it more resistant to bacterial and viral infections. Working with other nutrients, vitamin E can help prevent development of cataracts.

Selenium is a trace mineral, that is, the body does not need a large quantity for health. However, even in small quantities, in addition to its role as an antioxidant, selenium helps keep cell membranes healthy, helps the thyroid gland and pancreas function properly, and can help prevent dandruff in some people. A link between low selenium levels and HIV/AIDs victims is being explored.

Zinc is also a trace mineral. Zinc helps in the healing of wounds, helps maintain the senses of taste and smell, aids in normal growth, helps the reproductive system develop properly, and helps in the transport of Vitamin A from the liver.

Cysteine is found in poultry, oats, wheat germ, egg yolks, garlic and onions, and broccoli. It can protect against toxicity from smoking or pollution.

Glutamic Acid may reduce cravings for sugar and alcohol. It aids gastrointestinal healing and helps neurological and mental disorders. It is found in animal and vegetable proteins. Pregnant women and children should probably not take supplements of glutamic acid.

Glutathione protects against damage from chemicals, smoke and other toxins. It is valuable against cancer, skin problems, and cataracts.

Grape Seed Extract is often sold as a supplement for its antioxidant qualities. While the extract is often made from seeds taken from grapes made into juice, for example, you can actually get the same benefits by enduring the taste and crunching the seeds in grapes you can buy in the produce department of your local grocery.

Green Tea and Green Tea Extract can both provide antioxidant benefits, but green tea extract may be easier to deal with, say, when traveling or on a visit, than trying to brew a cup or pot of green tea. Green tea extract may also provide a more standard and dependable dose than the cup of tea you just brewed.

There are many books, web sites, magazines and other information which is centered on health, nutrition, diets, vitamins and antioxidants. This information is often based on one subject matter source, be it nutrition or vitamins. For the most part, very few offer information on all of these subjects in a comprehensive manner.
To find pertinent information on good health it is often through a lot of reading and research in different publications, to find the proper system that works for them with all the different items that are manufactured for good health.
In the information that is readily available today it may at times be difficult to decide what is right for you personally, the easy part of this is if one health regiment does not work another will to control weight, health and make you feel better in everyday life.
As a general rule, when a person is eating the proper foods it shows in their appearance, their hair and skin is healthier and their energy level is higher than a person who does not eat properly, does not get the proper vitamins and antioxidants. When a person does not get the proper nutrition, vitamins and antioxidants it is seen in the skin, which may not be clear, hair that can become dull and brittle and finger nails, which can split and break easily.
Of course, health is in the news every single day, and naturally everyone is concerned with proper nutrition and one of the most talked about parts of health and nutrition is antioxidants. There has been and is ongoing research regarding antioxidants, but what are they and what do they really do is the question that many people think they know but are not certain.
Antioxidants are found in many foods naturally such as vegetables, grains, nuts and some meat like poultry and fish. It is particularly rich goji juice which is made from the goji or wolf berry and is especially rich in the the Himalayan goji juice. In fact is found in abundance in most berries such as the acai and blueberry.
What this does is help to protect cells in the body against free radicals; these are molecules that are produced when the body breaks food down. Free radicals can also be found elsewhere, such as tobacco smoke and exposure to radiation. Without the protection of antioxidants according to some research, free radicals can damages cells in the body causing such effects as heart disease, cancer and other disease.
Other research leads to the belief that they help to slow the aging process and lengthen the life span, which is something that attracts people to the consumption of foods or daily supplements rather than the nutritional value.
Some of the better-known places that antioxidants are found is Beta-carotene, Lutein, Lycopene, Selenium, vitamin A, C and E, including foods rich in these. Antioxidants are extremely important due to their inherent free-radical fighting properties. Free radicals, when left unchecked, can harm the body at the cellular level and cause many of the symptoms that we associate with aging, such as wrinkling or discoloration of the skin.
For the most part, when an individual is consuming the proper foods it shows in their appearance, their skin in particular is healthier and their energy level is generally at a higher level than someone who does not eat properly, does not get the proper vitamins and antioxidants. This is where products such as goji juice and acai juice, for instance, can help because when a person does not get the needed nutrition it is seen in the skin, which may not be very clear.
Goji juice appears to be very important in this regard due to it’s strong ORAC rating which basically measures the free radical absorption capacity of a particular food item. The latest nutrition technology makes goji juice even more potent as spectroscopic analysis, which is essentially a molecular fingerprinting technique is used in the production phase to single out only the most nutrient dense goji berries with the highest absorption ratio in people.
With this particular method the quality of the goji juice is largely assured. Besides the himalayan goji or worlf berry and goji juice, other top sources of antioxidants include the acai berry, leafy green vegetables like spinach and broccoli, raspberries, strawberries and tomatoes, among others.

In order to get the health benefits that are provided by antioxidants you have to know where the best sources of antioxidants are. You should know what foods and drinks you should be eating and drinking on a regular basis. Although here are quite a few foods and drinks that have the reputation as being the best sources of antioxidants two simple sources are described in this article.

Berries

The first source of antioxidants I will discuss is berries. Berries are amongst the best sources of antioxidants in the world. This is true of all types of berries, such as raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and kiwi fruits just to name a few. As you know Antioxidants have important disease-fighting properties and the high amounts that are contained in all of these foods have beneficial effects on your health when included in a balanced diet. Studies have found that antioxidants are able to help prevent and repair the stress in the body that comes from oxidation which is a natural process that occurs during normal cell function. There is a catch however that you are going to want to be aware of, and this is that even though some foods are considered as being some of the best sources of antioxidants, the body is not able to absorb it all. This is why variety in your diet is so important. You should not just start eating only berries because you know that they are high in antioxidants, but rather eat a variety of food that you know is going to be healthy for you. A healthy, balanced diet is important for your health for many different reasons and the inclusion of antioxidants is just one consideration you should make when choosing what foods you will eat.

Green Tea

Another source of antioxidants is green tea. We have all heard for quite some time now just how beneficial green tea is to our health, and besides the fact that it contains caffeine, there is almost nothing in the world healthier and better for our bodies than green tea. Another benefit of green tea is simply taking the time from our seemingly increasingly busy and hectic lives to sit down quietly for a few minutes to enjoy a nice cup of tea. Moderation in all things is important and, just as with anything else, rather than changing completely your entire diet to include only these foods, you should just make sure that you are eating a properly balanced diet. Make sure to include some of the foods from each of the different food groups, and then include some of the foods and drinks high in antioxidants to finish off your diet plan. You can talk to your doctor if you want to get more information on this and get some helpful tips and advice on how to go about supplementing your diet with foods more rich in antioxidants. Even by just including a small amount of antioxidant rich foods in your diet you will still be benefiting.

Seems these day you can’t turn on the TV or open up a magazine without seeing an ad touting the latest health product that is “rich in antioxidants.” It is a long word, sometimes difficult to comprehend, but it certainly reads as though it can be beneficial to the body, correct? Indeed, antioxidants are found in a number of dietary supplements designed not necessarily for weight loss, but for overall good health. Yet, before you decide to go head first into a daily antioxidant regimen, it is suggested to know exactly what antioxidants do, where they are found, and whether they truly are helpful to the body.
Antioxidants are generally defined as those products which, naturally, prevent or lessen the body’s oxidation. Oxidation refers to the addition of oxygen, and consequent lessening of hydrogen, from an element – be it the body or something else. Consider silver, for example. When silver or other precious metals are exposed to too much oxygen, they can tarnish and lose their original beauty. Now imagine something similar happening to your body. We need oxygen to survive, yes, but the air we breathe is not one hundred percent pure. An intake of too much pure oxygen can actually cause toxicity.
Antioxidants, therefore, apply a balance by guarding the body from damaging elements. With regards to alternative health, antioxidants are believed to purify the blood. Human blood contains a certain amount of iron, which is broken down by oxygen. Getting back to our metals analogy, metal exposed to too much oxygen can rust. If you can imagine this rust in your bloodstream as the iron is broken down, you will better understand the presence of free radicals in your body that can cause damage. Antioxidants work to get rid of these free radicals and keep you healthy and active.
Where to find antioxidants
Unfortunately, it is believed that antioxidants do not occur enough naturally in our bodies, hence the recent explosion of supplements and products claiming to be high in antioxidants. Many foods, however, are naturally rich in antioxidants and make good additions to a healthful diet. Just a few foods include:
Acai – This exotic purple berry is indigenous to the Amazon rainforest, and used in drinks, energy bars, powders and shakes. Brazilians have used acai for years as a healthful supplement for foods.
Blueberries – These tart little berries are good for more than garnishing cereals and filling pies. Blueberries are rich in antioxidants and provide a good source of vitamins.
Dark Cocoa – The darker the chocolate, the higher the health properties. While it isn’t recommended to eat too much of it, an occasional bite can boost your antioxidant level.
For a balanced diet with antioxidants to assist well-being, consult a physician or diet professional to see what you need to eat, and how much you need daily. By knowing what is good for your body can you improve your overall well-being.

I didn’t know anything about antioxidant’s (except that they were good for me)UNTIL,…my son became ill with a (un-curable) health condition.

Then my wife attended American Medical Association certified Continuing Education classes for doctors, nurses, etc. (AMA CE) and learned the need for antioxidants, the various strengths of antioxidants, and the marketing tricks being done with antioxidants – most of which the public is completely unaware of.

Here’s some of what she learned as we found complete recovery for our son’s health challenge,…via the power of antioxidants in nature (instead of using symptom suppressing toxic drugs that often have significant negative side effects).

1. The marketing label you see in the health food store regarding antioxidant (ORAC=Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) can be mis-leading – often is.

2. Over 90 products from the shelves have been analyzed and here’s what they found:

A. 3 products touting “antioxidant” power actually had a pro-oxidizing effect — that means they acted the opposite of how they were advertised.

B. 1800 units of lab tested ORAC value was the average of the other 87 products. There was no industry test for checking “fat soluble” antioxidant capacity (only the water soluble capacity was being addressed).

C. The highest test results showed an ORAC (water soluble) capacity of just over 5,000 units of protection per gram.

What’s actually available to the informed, is antioxidants from natural food that provide over 17,000 Units of Protection per gram. That’s nearly 10 times the protection of the average product on the market and almost 3x the level of protection of the most potent antioxidant currently available on the health food shelves.

On item 1 above. Here’s how some marketers mislead with their ORAC labels.

They state the bottles entire ORAC level of protection, versus comparing units of antioxidant protection per gram or per equal serving.

So,…now you understand ORAC and the value of comparing gram to gram when you buy.

If you want to learn more, including WHY antioxidant protection is EXTREMELY Important – according to AMA CE classes we learned from…

You can learn our son’s real life, short story and learn that DEET chemicals have been found in Peguins (floated in the air to the poles via the jetstream they expect) – you think there may be toxicity around you? How about the 100 cites tested – all positive for antibiotics in their drinking water — do you understand the vast oxidative stress this puts on our bodies?

You need to understand antioxidants to enjoy top notch quality of life in today’s world. According to AMA certified CE, Oxidative stress IS THE ROOT CAUSE of All Illnesses (excluding trauma and genetic issues).

Knowing what antioxidants are and why they are important in the diet with regards to overall health and wellness, plus also knowing what foods are high in antioxidants can help everyone eat better and smarter. There are actually a wide range of different types of foods, many which are common items in the daily diet, that are high in antioxidants and provide a great number of health benefits for your body.
There is a misconception that the very highest amount of antioxidants is found in tea and, in particular, in green tea. While green tea is very high in antioxidants, there is one food item that actually has a higher content. Believe it or not, dark chocolate is the winner of the high antioxidant food category. It important to understand that this refers only to dark chocolate, and does not include milk chocolates or white chocolates. Dark chocolate is produced from the cocoa bean and is in the purest and least diluted form, which is why dark chocolate is so rich and distinct in flavor. Although high in antioxidants, eating large quantities of dark chocolate isn’t healthy either – just a small amount in the diet is beneficial. Dark chocolate contains flavonols, which are a type of flavinoid. Further breaking down the types of antioxidants in dark chocolate you will find procyanidins, epicatechins and catechins, this last one being the same antioxidant found in green tea.
Berries have long been recognized as a healthy addition to the diet, but now researchers and nutritionists know why. Berries, particularly strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and kiwi fruit, provide a large amount of antioxidants to the diet, plus they also add fiber, vitamins and great taste. Consider eating berries on your cereal or as a dessert rather than cake or pie. Berries also make an easy to carry snack for kids and are simple to have at your desk for between meal cravings.
Many vegetables are also high antioxidant food types and generally they include the green leafy vegetables. Some good examples of high antioxidant content vegetables include green and red cabbage, kale, spinach, broccoli and cauliflower. All of these vegetables are in the cruciferous group of vegetables along with bok choy, and Brussels sprouts. Eating these vegetables on a daily basis, or even adding one or two servings per week in addition to your regular diet, will help increase the amount of antioxidants available for your body to use.
Whenever planning to add more high antioxidant foods to your diet, be sure to do so reasonably and slowly, not all at once. In addition don’t only eat foods that are high antioxidant foods, you also need to consume complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, brown rice and cereals; proteins such as lean meats and fish, as well as other vegetables and fruits. Keep in mind that eating in balance helps your body with vitamins and minerals that are also necessary in the production of antioxidants as well as in overall health.

Antioxidants are molecules of nutrients in food that prevent oxidation from damaging the human body. Oxygen is used by the human body which produces a by-product that causes damage. The antioxidants act in a way to repair the damage done by the by-products. Some of the damages done by oxidative damage are diabetes, macular degeneration, heart disease and cancer. Some of the most commonly known antioxidants are vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and caroteniods.
Antioxidants are very helpful to human health. Some research states that foods that contain antioxidants can actually delay many of the age related diseases. Continual research is always being done about the knowledge of antioxidants. Antioxidants neutralize the by-products of the body. By products can be created not only by oxygen but other factors as well. Radiation and tobacco smoke are two things that cause by products. After a long period of time the damage that is done by the by products can not be reversed this can create cancer. But the antioxidants come in and prevent the by products from taking from other molecules which might help to prevent against cancer.
Another thing that also creates more by products in the body is over exercising. It puts more oxygen into the body and the oxygen creates by product. This concerns some people because it might worsen the damage to muscles. Since it is not possible to measure the amount of by products that are in the body there is not way to tell if a dangerous amount is in the body and if extra antioxidants are going to need to be taken. The damages from exercising occur over time. Regular exercise can increase the antioxidant defenses and protect against the by products create by exercise.
There are a lot of foods that have antioxidants, fruits, vegetables, grains, even some meats have them. Leafy green vegetables have Lutein and carotene. Carotene is also found in things like sweet potatoes, carrots, cantaloupe, squash, pumpkins and mangos. Carotene is usually found in foods that are orange in color.
Lycopene is found in such foods as tomatoes, watermelon, grapefruit, papaya, and guava. Most people get there intake of lycopene from tomatoes and tomato products. The mineral selenium isn’t antioxidants but have the same component. It is found in such foods as rice, meats, and bread. Brazil nuts have a high amount of selenium in them too
The vitamins A, C and E are also great in getting antioxidants. Foods that have a lot of vitamin A are liver, milk, egg yolks, carrots, mozzarella cheese and sweet potatoes. Cereals, beef, poultry, and fish are really high in vitamin C. So are many fruits and vegetables. Vitamin E is found in safflower, corn and soybean oils, wheat germ, and almonds. You can also find it in mangos, broccoli, and nuts.
A study has been done on antioxidants to see if they help to reduce the toxic effects of lead. The base of the research was that the main cause of lead being toxic is the oxidative stress. An imbalance was created between the by-products and the antioxidants in the body. This caused an excessive amount of by product in the body and resulted in destroying the tissues. Common symptoms of lead poisoning are anemia, irritability, headaches, weight loss, and motor impairment. Most lead poisoning is caused by eating foods with lead in them and by contact with an environment that has lead in it. The testing done to prove that antioxidants will reduce the toxins from lead was proven to be effective.

The emerging market for products claiming to slow aging is undeniably astounding. Among these, supplements containing antioxidants perhaps give the best promises to the consumers. Aside from the fact that these are a wound to the pocket, antioxidant products offer a delight to those who would like to look young in a flash. But how does this free-radical sponge really work?
Free Radicals Defined
First identified by Moses Gomberg in 1900, free radicals are molecular species that are highly reactive. These tiny things play a role in chemical reactions including that of the human. As the cells produce energy (for function and survival), the also create oxygen molecules that are unstable because its electrons are unpaired. These unpaired electrons make this thing to be highly labile.
In the human body, if these unstable molecules go together with other molecules, they would kill their newly acquainted fellows, thereby speeding up the aging process. Drinking, the radiation coming from TVs and computers, drugs, and cigarette smoking spawn free radicals. If we persistently have stress and do not take them away by way of exercise, we give way to the formation of free radicals. If we don’t have a good sleep at least seven hours, we are actually exciting production of more fee radicals.
A lot of changes in our body are as a result of the activities of the free radicals. They damage the DNA and impair other vital functions of cells, causing premature death to these cells. Over time, all these damages would mount up and cause our body to accelerate aging.
Upon breathing, oxygen induces a process called oxidation. And it is in here where free radicals form. This process is likened to the oxidation of metals. Once oxidized, aluminum turns to be white, iron becomes rusty, and copper transforms into green. In the same logic that oxidation damages metals; free radicals are also detrimental to our body.
How Antioxidants Work
Antioxidants are molecules that have the capability of preventing oxidation of other molecules (by the name itself: antioxidant). In the light of anti-aging, antioxidants prevent the formation of free radicals. Antioxidants are naturally occurring substances found in plants. If our body has an abundance of antioxidants, we will be able to prevent the harm brought about by free radicals.
Benefits of Antioxidants
Antioxidants can help you look younger, live longer, and be at your optimum health. Foods rich in antioxidants like fruits and vegetables can give you great protection from coronary heart diseases, and age-related diseases like Alzheimer’s disease.Antioxidants can also strengthen our immune resistance to diseases such as influenza and other bacterial and viral infections.
These substances also reduce a person’s risk of acquiring cancer, an incurable disease. Antioxidants also prevent glaucoma and the age-related degeneration of our macula, the part of the eye that is dedicated for superior acuity vision. Antioxidants also beat down the passing of the aging clock making your skin and other organs rejoice.
Carotenoids, zinc, selenium, and the Vitamins A, C, and E are some of the main antioxidants. Glutathione is said to be the most powerful among all forms of antioxidants. They are naturally present in our body since we were young but depletes as we get older.
If antioxidant supplements are not your type, you may take some delectable bite of the super fruits such as blueberry and raspberry which are said to contain the most number of antioxidants.
So now that you have understood well how these miracle supplements work, you would realize why these wonder tablets cost a lot. May you have a healthily long and young life!

Antioxidants are advertised by many but few ever have the whole range of antioxidants that your body needs. Antioxidants are those chemical substances naturally found in plants. They serve as your first line of defense against illness and aging.

Oxidation is a process that our bodies normally undergo. It is that process which allows us to function properly, to breathe, to move. But what is good for us may also have negative effects to our bodies. Oxidative damage can result from the production of excess oxygen byproducts called free radicals that react with our healthy cells, causing cellular damage and leading to degenerative diseases. Our bodies are naturally protected by a defense system against oxidative damage, however, human beings are one of the few animals that cannot produce the amount of antioxidants necessary to combat the accumulation of free radicals in our bodies.

Antioxidants – The Right Prescription

Recent studies have shown that free radicals are linked to various diseases, such as cancer, arthritis, atherosclerosis, heart disease, and even aging. With the right antioxidant formula, you can very well prevent the onset of these diseases, even to the extent of age reversal. Several researchers believe that antioxidant formulas are best if derived from fresh produce such as fruits and vegetables.

Antioxidant Prescription- Vitamins and Vitamin-forming Compounds

Some antioxidant Prescriptioncontains substances that are familiar to us, like vitamins or vitamin-forming compounds. Vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamin A, Coenzyme Q, and carotenoids, these are but a few of the ingredients found in an antioxidant formula.

Vitamin E, C, A, coenzyme Q10, and carotenoids found in antioxidant formulas must be constantly replenished through the diet. The body manufactures others, but the levels of many of these can be bolstered through dietary supplements.

Vitamin A for instance is required for night vision, and for healthy skin. Many believe as well that consuming antioxidant formulas that contain vitamin A helps slow aging.

New studies show that antioxidants don’t often play its role in isolation. Scientists have found that antioxidants work best when they are working in conjunction with other antioxidants. There is in fact a dynamic interplay among the systems with various antioxidant cycles acting to prevent cell damage and disease. So, an antioxidant Prescriptionthat contains as much antioxidant types possible is the best way to go for.

The body’s defense mechanism is composed of various antioxidants with different functions. Antioxidant formulas have been formulated to contain all the antioxidants that research has found necessary for effective detoxification.
