<p>To understand the value and importance of antioxidants, you must first understand the destructive results of free radicals. </p>
<p>Free radicals occur naturally as a result of normal, daily reactions within your body.  Essentially, when a molecule is a free radical, it is an unstable molecule which contains a free electron which is seeking a connection.  These molecules seek to complete this unstable existence by latching on to tissues such as blood vessel linings or cell membranes, creating a chronic state of inflammation within the body.  This on-going inflammation eventually results in damage to various tissues of the body.  Antioxidants bind to the free radicals, thus preventing the damage they would normally cause. </p>
<p>The damage caused by free radicals has been linked to heart disease, cancer, arthritis, and many other conditions and illnesses.  Free radical damage is also believed to contribute to many other degenerative aspects of aging, such as wrinkles, hardening of arteries, and some of the loss of mental acuity that sometimes occurs with age. </p>
<p>Antioxidants are available in many different forms and substances. Vitamins such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta carotene (a form of vitamin A) are antioxidants in addition to their other benefits to your health and well-being.  Selenium and zinc are two minerals which are also antioxidants. </p>
<p>Other compounds; cysteine, glutamic acid, and glutathione, for example, are also antioxidants, as are natural and herbal products such as ginkgo, hawthorn, rosemary, green tea extract, and grape seed extract. </p>
<p>Vitamin A, in the form of beta carotene, is water soluble and can be found in vegetables such as spinach.  Vitamin A is important for skin health, helps growth in children and protects against night blindness in addition to other benefits. </p>
<p>Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) is crucial to the body&#8217;s ability to produce collagen, an important protein that keeps skin damage minimal. Collagen can delay the development of wrinkles and saggy skin by helping skin hold onto its elasticity. Vitamin C also expedites the body&#8217;s ability to repair tissues so wounds heal more quickly. It is also important in the body&#8217;s ability to absorb and use several other nutrients. </p>
<p>Vitamin E (Alpha-Tocopherol), like vitamin C, is not produced or stored in the body, so it must be constantly replenished through diet or supplementation.  It encourages the proper development of muscles. It can help boost the effectiveness of the immune system, primarily by making it more resistant to bacterial and viral infections.  Working with other nutrients, vitamin E can help prevent development of cataracts. </p>
<p>Selenium is a trace mineral, that is, the body does not need a large quantity for health.  However, even in small quantities, in addition to its role as an antioxidant, selenium helps keep cell membranes healthy, helps the thyroid gland and pancreas function properly, and can help prevent dandruff in some people.  A link between low selenium levels and HIV/AIDs victims is being explored. </p>
<p>Zinc is also a trace mineral.  Zinc helps in the healing of wounds, helps maintain the senses of taste and smell, aids in normal growth, helps the reproductive system develop properly, and helps in the transport of Vitamin A from the liver. </p>
<p>Cysteine is found in poultry, oats, wheat germ, egg yolks, garlic and onions, and broccoli.  It can protect against toxicity from smoking or pollution. </p>
<p>Glutamic Acid may reduce cravings for sugar and alcohol.  It aids gastrointestinal healing and helps neurological and mental disorders.  It is found in animal and vegetable proteins.  Pregnant women and children should probably not take supplements of glutamic acid. </p>
<p>Glutathione protects against damage from chemicals, smoke and other toxins.  It is valuable against cancer, skin problems, and cataracts. </p>
<p>Grape Seed Extract is often sold as a supplement for its antioxidant qualities.  While the extract is often made from seeds taken from grapes made into juice, for example, you can actually get the same benefits by enduring the taste and crunching the seeds in grapes you can buy in the produce department of your local grocery. </p>
<p>Green Tea and Green Tea Extract can both provide antioxidant benefits, but green tea extract may be easier to deal with, say, when traveling or on a visit, than trying to brew a cup or pot of green tea.  Green tea extract may also provide a more standard and dependable dose than the cup of tea you just brewed. </p>

Oxidation is the interaction between oxygen molecules and all the different substances they may contact, from metal to living tissue. Sometimes oxidation is not such a bad thing, as in the formation of super-durable anodized aluminum. Other times oxidation can be destructive, such as the rusting of an automobile or the spoiling of fresh fruit. The process of oxidation depends on the amount of oxygen present in the air and the nature of the material it touches. True oxidation happens on a molecular level &#8212; we only see the large-scale effects as the oxygen causes free radicals on the surface to break away.<br />
So, what has this got to do with your health? Well, when a man oxidizes, we call it aging and sometime cancer. Antioxidants counter this process. Nature gave us foods for our DNA to handle oxidation of our cells. The Stone Age population was hunter-gatherers and looked for colorful foods &#8211; up to 150 in variety throughout the seasons. These foods provided antioxidants. Anthropologists have stated that Harry and Sally of the Stone Age did not die of diabetes, cancer, heart attacks or stroke. They died from some traumatic event instead.<br />

<p>Antioxidants are molecules of nutrients in food that prevent oxidation from damaging the human body. Oxygen is used by the human body which produces a by-product that causes damage. The antioxidants act in a way to repair the damage done by the by-products. Some of the damages done by oxidative damage are diabetes, macular degeneration, heart disease and cancer. Some of the most commonly known antioxidants are vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and caroteniods.<br />
Antioxidants are very helpful to human health. Some research states that foods that contain antioxidants can actually delay many of the age related diseases. Continual research is always being done about the knowledge of antioxidants. Antioxidants neutralize the by-products of the body. By products can be created not only by oxygen but other factors as well. Radiation and tobacco smoke are two things that cause by products. After a long period of time the damage that is done by the by products can not be reversed this can create cancer. But the antioxidants come in and prevent the by products from taking from other molecules which might help to prevent against cancer.<br />
Another thing that also creates more by products in the body is over exercising. It puts more oxygen into the body and the oxygen creates by product. This concerns some people because it might worsen the damage to muscles. Since it is not possible to measure the amount of by products that are in the body there is not way to tell if a dangerous amount is in the body and if extra antioxidants are going to need to be taken. The damages from exercising occur over time. Regular exercise can increase the antioxidant defenses and protect against the by products create by exercise.<br />
There are a lot of foods that have antioxidants, fruits, vegetables, grains, even some meats have them. Leafy green vegetables have Lutein and carotene. Carotene is also found in things like sweet potatoes, carrots, cantaloupe, squash, pumpkins and mangos. Carotene is usually found in foods that are orange in color.<br />
Lycopene is found in such foods as tomatoes, watermelon, grapefruit, papaya, and guava. Most people get there intake of lycopene from tomatoes and tomato products. The mineral selenium isn&#8217;t antioxidants but have the same component. It is found in such foods as rice, meats, and bread. Brazil nuts have a high amount of selenium in them too<br />
The vitamins A, C and E are also great in getting antioxidants. Foods that have a lot of vitamin A are liver, milk, egg yolks, carrots, mozzarella cheese and sweet potatoes. Cereals, beef, poultry, and fish are really high in vitamin C. So are many fruits and vegetables. Vitamin E is found in safflower, corn and soybean oils, wheat germ, and almonds. You can also find it in mangos, broccoli, and nuts.<br />
A study has been done on antioxidants to see if they help to reduce the toxic effects of lead. The base of the research was that the main cause of lead being toxic is the oxidative stress. An imbalance was created between the by-products and the antioxidants in the body. This caused an excessive amount of by product in the body and resulted in destroying the tissues. Common symptoms of lead poisoning are anemia, irritability, headaches, weight loss, and motor impairment. Most lead poisoning is caused by eating foods with lead in them and by contact with an environment that has lead in it. <p>There was a recent article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) that concluded that taking antioxidants actually increased your risk of death, instead of making you healthier.  This was reported in the Washington Post, without proper explanation of the JAMA article and its conclusions.  It is true that studies, including the ones that JAMA referred to, show that antioxidants do NOT help users live longer.  However, what was not pointed out by the Washington Post is that theses studies all used synthetic vitamin A and E, not natural sources.<br />
Furthermore, most other studies over the years on antioxidants have used SYNTHETIC antioxidants and have consequently shown that these synthetic antioxidants degrade your cells over time and cause adverse health effects.  For example, studies have shown that synthetic beta-carotene actually increases your risk of cancer, while natural beta-carotene decreases it!  The message is clear:  synthetic antioxidants should not be consumed as they can and do harm your health for many reasons.<br />
Synthetic vitamins, including antioxidants such as vitamin A, B, C and E, are all concocted in labs, just like drugs are.  In fact, most B vitamins are coal tar derivatives.  Most ascorbic acid or synthetic vitamin C is made by fermenting corn sugar into sorbitol, then hydrogenating it.  After this process, acetone (i.e. nail polish remover) is added to break the molecular bonds which then creates isolated, crystalline, ascorbic acid.  Does this sound like something that is good for your body?<br />
These synthetic vitamins have been shown to be treated like foreign substances in the body, just as drugs are.  This means that the body has to work hard to detoxify the body from them, even though most of us are overloaded right now with detoxifying our bodies of numerous environmental chemicals.  This tends to cancel out or even outweigh any positive benefits the nutrient might bring to your body.<br />
In addition, synthetic vitamins are notorious for lacking all the co-factors your body needs in order to make good use of that nutrient.  This means your body will take those other co-factors if possible from other areas of your body where they are needed.  This depletes your body of other essential nutrients.  The JAMA article about antioxidants also went on to state that vitamins and antioxidants should be consumed from living source fruits and vegetables, although this was grievously omitted from the Washington Post article.<br />
More specifically, the JAMA article said:  &#8220;To get maximum antioxidant benefit, antioxidant vitamins should be taken in their LIVING SOURCE, WHOLE-FOOD form. In fact, recent studies echo the importance of whole-food vitamins in this regard. Vitamin E has been shown to be a powerful antioxidant. However, if the synthetic form of vitamin E, like alpha tocopherol, is taken, it has the opposite effect contributing to the very problems that the antioxidant is meant to alleviate.&#8221;<br />
One problem with simply throwing out all antioxidant supplements is that more and more research is showing us the very important role that antioxidants play in protecting us from things like heart disease and cancer and extending our lives.  Antioxidants help to quench free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can cause damage in our bodies.  These free radicals are produced normally in our bodies, but much larger quantities are produced by most people these days because of excess pollution, environmental toxins, and stress in our modern day lives.<br />
Unfortunately, most people don&#8217;t get enough vitamins and minerals in their foods today.  They often don&#8217;t eat well enough to begin with, but even if they try to eat well, most of our food today has a lower vitamin and mineral content than our foods at the turn of the century.  In fact, some studies have shown a decrease of 50 percent in antioxidants in our foods over the past couple decades.  That is a huge decline!  In addition to this, we have a much greater need for antioxidants today in order to help protect our bodies against the free radicals caused by toxins and stress.<br />
This means that supplementing with various antioxidants like vitamins A, B, C, and E, as well as DHLA and Green Tea, is still important for many of us today if we want to live long, healthy lives, but we need to choose only whole food supplements.  True, 100% whole food supplements with NO synthetic or toxic ingredients are unfortunately the exception, not the rule today, however, they can be found if you take the time to search for them. </p>

<p>Oxidation is a routine body process that causes destruction of human cells. Many studies proved that this accumulative destruction is what triggers aging and death.  It takes place because of normal metabolism, but fastens due to too much exposure to sun, pollution, smoking and alcohol.</p>
<p>Antioxidants are chemical substances that protect body cells from injury caused by unstable molecules called free radicals. A free radical is a kind of charged atom or a part of a molecule. </p>
<p>Damage by these free radicals could lead to tumor. Antioxidants alleviate by interacting with free radicals. Effective antioxidants include lycopene, beta-carotene, vitamin E, A and C. </p>
<p>To re-establish their stability, free radicals take an electron from their surroundings. Normally they take electrons from one of human&#8217;s healthy cells. At this point, antioxidants come into play a vital role by offering its own electrons to the free radicals. Thus, they prevent the body from cellular damage. </p>
<p>Each time, when the free radicals take electrons, antioxidants give away an electron and eventually stop reacting as antioxidants. Thus, it is advisable to supply necessary antioxidant vitamins and other antioxidant supplements to act as antioxidants.</p>
<p>Antioxidant Supplements and Vitamins:</p>
<p>Antioxidants are rich in fruits as well as vegetables. It also found in abundance in foodstuffs such as nuts, poultry, fish, grains and meats.</p>
<p>•	Beta-carotene is very useful as antioxidant supplement and found mostly in sweet potatoes, squash, cantaloupe, apricots, carrots, mangoes and pumpkin. A few green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach, collard greens are also abundant in beta-carotene. </p>
<p>•	Vitamin A plays an essential role in the antioxidant production. It is one of the effective antioxidant vitamins found abundant in sweet potatoes, mozzarella cheese, carrots, egg yolks and milk.</p>
<p>•	Vitamin E is also one of the main antioxidant vitamins found commonly in almonds and in oils such as wheat germ, soybean and corn oil. It is abundant in mangoes, broccoli, nuts and other foodstuffs. </p>

<p>The focus of research on vitamins these days is how antioxidant supplements may play a role in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Antioxidant supplements &#8211; E, C, and beta-carotene (a form of vitamin A) &#8211; have potential when it comes to health promotion. However, most data available about such health promoting properties of antioxidant supplements are incomplete. And only up to 30 percent Americans are taking some form of antioxidant supplements. </p>
<p>But what exactly are antioxidants and how important are they? </p>
<p>Antioxidants come in two forms. They can either be vitamins or minerals. They help prevent oxygen from reacting with other chemicals in cells. Such reactions &#8211; called oxidation &#8211; could lead to cell damage which may result in heart disease and cancer.  </p>
<p>Antioxidants can be found in a variety of foods, but they are far more common in fresh fruits and vegetables. A health diet of fresh produce could lead to high levels of antioxidants in your body, which could only mean one thing &#8211; less free radicals (those harmful molecules that cause cell damage) and a healthier you. </p>
<p>When antioxidants start to work, they destroy the free radicals or break the chain. You see, here&#8217;s what happens when you have lots of free radicals in your body. Because they are highly unstable, these free radicals have the tendency to steal or get electrons from stable molecules and in so doing, make those molecules unstable as well, turning them into free radicals. This becomes a long chain and will go on and on until such a chain in broken. This is where antioxidants come in whose sole function is to break the chain and neutralize free radicals. </p>
<p>During the process of neutralization, the antioxidants are neutralized themselves. Hence, they also become oxidized. That is why the body needs a constant source of antioxidants in order to keep combating these harmful free radicals and stop them from multiplying. </p>
<p>With the kind of diet most of us have these days, it is very likely that we may not be getting enough antioxidants from the foods that we eat. And remember that the body needs to replenish its levels of antioxidants constantly. This is where antioxidant supplements come in.  </p>
<p>Because the body may not be getting enough antioxidants because you don&#8217;t enough fruits or you don&#8217;t eat a lot of vegetables, you therefore need an alternate source such as antioxidant supplements.  </p>
<p>Antioxidant supplements are that source. And while antioxidant supplements can&#8217;t very well take the place of natural antioxidants, they can however aid in increasing the level of antioxidants in your body. </p>
